How long have you been making bags?
I made my first bag in 2014
How did you get started?
It’s quite a funny story actually. I had taken up ice skating lessons and needed a bag to carry my skates! I couldn’t find a pretty bag at a reasonable price, or made in Australia, so I measured my skates and headed to the nearest fabric store!
I soon found I was carrying that bag every time I went out, and people were asking where they could get their hands on one.
What is your greatest inspiration?
My customers inspire me to continue with their wonderful feedback and the way they love my product.
What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business?
For me it has to be the business side, I just want to make bags and not worry about costing’s and boring old bookwork. Also the mess! It takes over the house.
What is the best thing about owning your own creative business?
Constant challenges, learning opportunities and taking pride knowing that I created the product I sell.
Hi, my name is Michelle and I am the creator of Ikon Design.
I hand-make all items in my home with the help of my husband Andrew, and my 8yr old son Luke. Andrew helps with cutting and loading up the ute for market days. Luke makes most of the jewellery I sell, and helps with odd jobs like fetching and turning things in the right way.
I have a passion for making things, and a background in fashion, so it was only natural that I began making beautiful fashion accessories.
My mum was a seamstress and had tried to teach me to sew since I was a girl; I resisted and preferred my outdoor activities. I literally couldn’t sew a button on! She cheered the day I churned out my first bag on her 1950’s sewing machine! (I was in my 40’s so she had waited a really long time!) I have come a long way since then, and I now fix Mums hems!
I am inspired by beautiful fabric prints and colour, but ultimately seeing people walk around carrying my creations is what makes it all worthwhile.
