From start to finish, Juanita Tortilla has been created and run by a team of one, me. Hello!
I am Juanita - the one-woman independent maker behind Juanita Tortilla. I make bags and accessories for eco-conscious people, reusing and re-purposing pre-loved material into one of a kind items.
It's all self-taught. Working without patterns or instructions, it takes me a very long time to make an item. I also work with several cups of tea and a penchant for ignoring rules and instructions.
How long have you been making your creations?
I have been always been a daydreamer and making things since I was a child, but only started selling my jewellery online in 2005 when Etsy launched. Bags and purses are the latest addition to the Juanita Tortilla repertoire and I am so excited that they are fast gaining appreciation.
How did you get started?
Life got creative when I became a poor graduate student's wife in 2004 when we uprooted from our home country to start a new life in the US.
What is your greatest inspiration?
Often I find myself subscribing to the minimalist and 'less is more' aesthetic. Nature is a fantastic inspiration, too, with all the colours available and where beauty can be found in imperfections.
What is the greatest challenge to owning and operating your own business?
My greatest challenge is marketing my work to the general public. Most makers and creatives may agree with me on that. Also, just having many ideas but not enough time and extra set of hands.
What is the best thing about owning your own creative business?
The freedom to dictate my own schedule, meeting like-minded creatives, and receiving compliments and support from fans!
